Chiming in a bit late here.

You get what you pay for. I have been a client of Enswitch for over two years and have been nothing but happy. If you have a maojor problem at 4:00 AM they are there for you. If you have a problem (even when it may not be an issue in their software) they will work until the issue is resolved. Most companies are 9-5 where after 5 PM there is no one to talk to.

Also, I agree with this stance. There's nothing wrong with a pure-SIP
service delivery platform; Broadsoft is doing just fine. :-)

Bringing the calls into Enswitch over a hard circuit depends on TDM
support that - for all the evolution of the technology over the last few
years - is still sometimes flaky, and limits the scalability, dynamic
organisation and high availability of the platform. Specifically, it
ties call acceptance (and perhaps processing) to a particular host into
which the circuit is plugged.

It is much wiser to use outside TDM->SIP gateways. They are more
robust, have lower mean time between failure, interoperate better, and
allow the platform the fluidity of existing in a pure IP space.

Certainly would agree, however, do upstream providers strip or modify
DSCP?

We use Comcast and I'm reasonably sure that they're rewriting DSCP to
0x20/cs1 on anything above 0x00. My initial plan for QoS was to use DSCP
but it seems various traffic (including, but not all, VoIP) was tagged
the same 0x20 from them so it was pointless for us.

In a simple router situation I can see QoS being easier with IAX as you
simply prioritize udp/4569. We're using PIX/ASA so we do SIP inspect,
prioritize the RTP and rate limit all other traffic to below 80% of our
purchased service. It's not DSCP but we're unable to use a true DSCP
method due to our upstream.

So far so good, it works well for us on a small scale.

The proper approach to this problem is to have the CPE set a DiffServ
codepoint bit (e.g. EF) on RTP packets, rather like the 'tosaudio'
parameter in sip.conf in Asterisk. This bit can then be matched on
and prioritised (and propogated upstream if need be).

I am under the impression this is something most CPE can do.

The point is still valid.
In the real world (as oppose to cyber) where we have governments that
will lock up those people the rules are a bit different. But in cyber
world where complete anarchy rules you should put good protective bars
and locks on your doors, otherwise YOU are at fault because YOU knew
that they WILL show up and without protection your only tool to punish
them (hence controlling them) will be bitching on an unrelated user
list.

Are you trying to say that those that believe so really think that the

That depends on how one chooses to direct blame, and why. Blame can
be directed either at a failure to prevent a preventable event, or at

When corporate managers in large-company CYA cultures, clerical
bureaucrats, government administrators and the like issue blame, for

I find that argument equally untenable, with reference to the same
underlying principle.

You should certainly behave pragmatically and realistically, which
means locking your house in recognition of the fact that there are
people out there that will try to burglarise it.

But the theory of liability that holds them accountable for it is not
dependent on the steps you took to limit the feasibility of the crime.
It's still burglary, unless you invited someone in and unequivocally
offered them your possessions.

I suspect all of this is beside the point, because the real thesis
here seems to be about the level of moral outrage or emotional
indignation that one ought to feel. That is difficult to codify
objectively; it is, in the end, a matter of personal choice and
disposition. Some people are doubtless inclined and able to approach
the disappearance of all their domestic possessions with a Zen-like
detachment, while others would bristle with rage if so much as a blade
of grass were pilfered from their front lawn.

I should have worded things a bit more clearly because my point seems to be misconstrued. Not the first time it's happened with vague analogies... :)

To be clear, you only have yourself to BLAME if you leave your doors unlocked. That's not to say that the break-in was right, justified or legal, just that you should have used a measure of caution.

I'm not saying that there's no culpability for crooks, I'm saying that just like driving defensively, we need to be proactive about security. If someone registers a phone against your SIP server and uses 10k long distance minutes across the globe, your upstream provider will likely not have any sympathy for you. We have no one to blame but ourselves when we overlook security.

The sad truth is that there are bad people out there who are doing bad things. We can wear the rose colored glasses all we want, but it's best to lock the doors before putting them on.

Thanks for the response dave, i understand what you are saying but sometimes you loose your tamper when things go beyond expectation.

That’s what happened with me yesterday too, but I wrote a very decent email to Voxalot guys and they never responded back.

Expecting them to cooperate to find out the culprit if they are not involved in it.

Voxalot is one of the more respected and veteran companies in this sector, I doubt it
if they had personally been in charge of the hack attach you are describing. If you are
going to publicly claim that a certain company hacked your systems, I suggest that you
be able to back it up by some proper proof - or Voxalot may want to sue you for slander.

When I do not lock my doors, I trust people not to come in. _but I do not allow them to do so.

nobody has the right to open unlocked doors - people who do this

have to be locked bihind locked doors. ;-)

Yep, Doddle is SIP compliant so that you can make and receive calls using Asterisk (B2BUA) or any SIP server

I've gotten at least 4 direct spam messages from this Ashish guy in the
last week. In addition to being outright annoying, they are also
written in an uncultured and ill-grammared way, riddled with errata of
even the most commonsensical particles of written word.

I don't know that I'd take a vendor who can't do proofreading consistent
with basic literacy like that seriously.

We have implemented with 4xE1 line with 1 openvoxvoip failover box.
it is working fine.Their distributor SAVSI (www.savsi.com) supplied and
implemented for us.
Very little efforts and we can even set it up ourselves if we knew it is
that simple to set up.
They also do remote support.Worth contacting them.

Hi Vijay,

It is very common to see hackers coming from IP addresses belonging to reputable companies. But this doesn't mean that those companies themselves are involved in these hack attempts. They can't control who misuses their IP addresses, but usually they do try their best to block such attempts. The problem is that many times these IP addresses belong to compromised servers, and the server owners themselves don't even know that their servers are being misused by hackers.

The only way to fight such hack attempts is to implement security measures on your own end. I have learned it the hard way, because my Asterisk servers have been hacked a few times in last few years, and I have worked with clients who faced the same issue. I usually send email to the owners of these IP addresses, which you can find from whois database, but never ever got any reply back from anyone. I know they can't do much either as I have worked in NOCs of some serious ISPs. Hackers change the IP addresses very easily, as they know that they can't do their dirty job from one single IP address.

If you want to implement some security on your server, I would suggest to start wit fail2ban. Download it from fail2ban.org, spend some time on their wiki, and also set it up for asterisk as described in http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Fail2Ban+%28with+iptables%29+And+Asterisk. It is a really good utility. Another good idea is to change default ports of the most commonly used software, and also block ports which you don't use.

We've had some issues with users coming in from Voxalot IPs as well. Was
suspicious calling patterns and traffic, but Voxalot was very responsive
in helping us track things down. I seriously doubt they're ignoring
response emails. It's Sunday in the US, and many smaller companies run
limited support staff.

FYI Voxalot is not the users who use it. Voxalot is a platform where different users can manage their various VOIP providers. Just because a hacker decided to abuse the Voxalot network to send you calls doesn't mean Voxalot is involved. From a legal perspective in the US carriers have at least partial immunity from the actions of their subscribers so your thinking that they somehow "must" do anything for you is false. Are you new to public internet? Have you ever considered looking in to server logs? If you look in to them you will see three is a 100's of different IP's trying to get to your system's all of the time...
So my recommendation to you would be keep it to your self and hire a security consultant who would be able to secure your network.

Get a Cisco ASA hire a Cisco admin and put your network behind a firewall close all ports and do a NAT to the ports that you only need for your operation.

My first attempt is to get the response from Voxalot only and few of my
emails were sent around a month back to them, when my switch was hacked at
first, but since then, I have not received any reply back from them.

We've had some issues with users coming in from Voxalot IPs as well. Was
suspicious calling patterns and traffic, but Voxalot was very responsive

I am talking what has happened, this can happen with anyone.

We have been able to catch it soon, we got the alert from our security
system only, but that does not mean, we should leave the intruders just like
that.

Anyone trying to break door of your home or even broke it off does not mean,
your home is not secured, there could be different circumstances.

Moreover, twice hacking has happened once on VPS switch we are using in USA
and second time, it did happened on different server, voxalot's IP keep on
tracing different IP's and keep try hacking them off, as these are 2
different instances on different servers from same IP of Voxalot.

If they are not involved in the attack, they must respond to the emails sent to them, with last attack on my server, I sent them emails quiet a few times, they don’t even bother to reply to it.

I did this with a DS3, Adtran MX2800, seven HP DL380 equiped with Sangoma quad cards and NFAS, so seven D chans for the entire DS3 rather than twenty eight.

NFAS saved a bunch of money because GXing wanted $100/Dchan/Mo.

Those machines simply acted as gateways to a HP DL380 or two.

You can build TDMoE units yourself based on cheap 1u or mini-itx
enclosures since TDMoE can work with a low end
CPU like a single 1GHz Via CPU.

It really makes a difference if you don't need onboard EC since you
can get it for ~$600 for a quad port T1/E1 TDMoE
while a quad port non-EC redfone is ~$1600 at voipsupply

of course you would have to put some configuring effort into this

You can use 2x 2u server with 2 cards each. It'll save on server cost.
Having 4 cards in one 3u/4u/tower server will probably work fine with
some dual quad core cpu's (8 logical cpu's)
but like previously pointed out it's a single point of failure.

Do you know the price of that device ?
Anyways they say they only detect the loss of signal (alarm condition)
or AIS which
is loss of signal on RX or TX. This won't detect loss of dchannel or
anything else...

It's clear that they are doing a good job of focusing their efforts on 12
of the 2300 Yellow Pages categories, making sure they are very good with
the first 12 or so before expanding. I'm sure a lot of work went into the
lead generation logic.

Don't try to catch up. Figure out how to offer something that offers a
slightly different model than Yext. Find customers that like the idea of
Yext, but don't like something about it, then build it for them. Search
the forums/web for weaknesses in Yext's offerings, then fill in that gap.

Evolution can be good for business. They are providing a valuable

I am pretty sure they are using asterisk at the heart and perhaps using some neat APIs for call transcription.
