People don't run software that's commonly accepted to be insecure and full of
possible holes. It's a bit like driving without brakes and no seatbelt.
It works just fine in only extremely limited situations.

Send a pair of those rose colored glasses my way. When reality sets back in for you, have a look at Windows' ~70% market share (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows). In fact, the MAJORITY of people run software that is commonly accepted to be insecure and full of security holes. It's called windows and it's the reason that there is such a rich aftermarket for anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software. It must work just fine, or at least relatively fine, considering how widely it's used.
