[asterisk-biz] Astricon discount codes?

Has anyone seen any discount codes for Astricon 2009?

I've always seen several codes, one from a vendor or two, another as a
past attendee, another as a Digium customer, etc.

But nothing this year? What's going on?
I have a tight budget as I assume is the case with most trips of this kind
these days.

Help me save some money!

-Eric

Best solution I have found for this is to get a Remote Call Forwarding
number from the local ILEC. Make sure it is in a prefix local to the
institution or area from where they expect to receive the calls. Have the
RCF number forward to a standard VoIP DID. While you will pay a per-minute
charge in addition to the Collect Call charges, it is usually around $0.01
(or less) per minute if the forwarded location (VoIP DID) is a local call
from the RCF number. The client would then pay the collect charges on the
ILEC bill.

Let me know if you need any assistance.

Sincerely,
Trevor Hammonds

Re: [asterisk-biz] US VoIP DIDs that accept collect calls

A call where the recipient pays instead of the caller.

In phone systems (especially mobile) in some other countries, this is
normal. But in the US, this is highly unusual and requires special
steps to accomplish, which is why it has special terminology associated
with it.

[asterisk-biz] US VoIP DIDs that accept collect calls

I've got a few customers who have asked several times for DIDs that can
accept collect calls. Vitelity says their providers don't support it,
which I can understand. The purpose is likely to get a local number near a
prison so the inmate can call locally and not pay $10/minute. Since the
collect call can be billed at widely varying rates, I'm guessing it is a
headache to do well.

Does anyone know of any providers offering US DIDs that can accept collect
calls?

Maybe if that's the way you like it, sure.  For most people who want spam
gone, Deleted Items is probably a safe bet.

Again, while I think the lack of configurability for the location it puts

I personally want spam to go to a spam folder until I delete it.

No matter how good the spam filtering is, there are false positives and I would prefer to simply glance at massive amounts of obvious spam for the obvious false positives than dig through valid yet deleted mails which would be much harder to spot.

I delete tons of mails but do not empty until whatever reasonable amount of time has passed that I am almost positive that something won't pop up, leaving me wishing I could retrieve that deleted item.

Sure, I could go fishing on tapes or whatever backup method is utilized, but I think going to a spam folder much better.

Your argument is unfair to Boxbe. The argument should be that Boxbe
is
incompatible with your archiving methodolgy, which is strange --
delete a message, but don't empty your Deleted Items folder, so you
can
archive deleted emails for posterity?

While sure, it might be nice if Boxbe let you specify what folder to
move
deleted items to, you could make your archiving method work. But I
think
the fault lies in your archiving method rather than Boxbe. I'm
guessing
that 99% of people use the Deleted Items folder for just that --
Deleted
Items, items you no longer care about and wish to be gone. You are a
very
small exception, I would guess.

Why not create an Archive folder and just move things there instead of
deleting? I'm sure you could create a hotkey of some sort to make
that
happen instead of delete.

At the end of the day, this is a contractual dispute, and if Skype/eBay
got into a bad-for-them agreement with Joltid, and then tried to get
around it technically, and Joltid caught wind of it and asked them to
stop, and they didn't, then the law system seems to be working correctly.

I'm sure that Skype will survive in some way or another, and if it
doesn't, something else will rise up from the ashes. Maybe the founders
of Skype who are now Joltid planned it this way and got away with the
contract Joltid signed with Skype that greatly benefitted them to the
point where Skype could no longer exist, leaving a big hole for Joltid to
jump into with their Skype-killing product.

Sketchy, maybe unethical even if my supposition is true, but legal
nonetheless.

[asterisk-biz] Fwd: OT: Voice Operators' Group forming

In the spirit of assisting other forums which are relevant to the

more general "operations" list. Like NANOG, but for voice. Not
sponsored by Digium, but I'll subscribe anyway. ;-)

(Note: the "puck.nether.net" server does time-delay greylisting, so
you'll see a delay on your "subscribe" request the first time they

Re: [asterisk-biz] Skype technology licensing.

I think the bigger issue is how Digium haven't announced the license
price or even model for the Asterisk/Skype gateway license yet expect
beta users to gush about how it's finally available.

Sorry boys, get F realistic first then I'll spend my time beta testing
your product.

(the fact they haven't discussed means it's going to probably end badly
- I'm expecting something like a monthly license fee or something
equally difficult to swallow).

Hi,

Plenty to talk about today. Dave Nelsen, a founder of Talkshoe, has a

but other questions may be answered today.

One of our regulars, Maxim, mentioned GizmoVoice.com which explains
everything you wanted to know about getting a free Google Voice number
and being able to use it with SIP, thanks to Gizmo & co. I've done
this with OpenSky and it has worked well so far.

Eric,

A 911 address is required by CPUC rules for any circuit delivered by
the LEC. This is not necessarily a street address that the USPS would
use, and you are not required to use it yourself. I suggest you
contact the agency that operates the PSAP for that property and ask
for their assistance. At a minimum, they can get you an
MSAG-qualified address for Verizon.

If you need any assistance, please sent me a message off list.

Sincerely,
Trevor Hammonds

[asterisk-biz] help - anyone good navigating the requirements for e911

help - anyone good navigating the requirements for e911.  I'm having
trouble in California ordering dry DSL, data services, or even pots
services due to the phone company (Verizon) requiring a street number
for the physical address.  I know where the parcel is and can point it
out on the assessors parcel map, engineering knows where the parcel is
and we agree where service should go but it is claimed that even for
DATA there is an e911 and CPUC requirement that a street number be
tied to the circuit/cable&pair which seems to me to be completly
preposterous. The parcel has no address and I'd like to keep it that
way. Any help or suggestions in negotiating the regs and getting
Verizon to actually take an order for service would be appreciated. I
want to put a sip based * there.

[asterisk-biz] Friday 2009-07-24 12:00 EDT: Voxeo Labs on VoIP Users Conference

Hi all,

You may have heard yesterday that Adhearsion and Voxeo have created a
new baby, Voxeo Labs. From our (non-biz) point of view, I'd recommend
following the blogs: http://blogs.voxeo.com/ to see how what they do
might be of interest to you and your asterisk/voip activities,
commercial or private.

Since I myself know little about what this all means, I've invited a
lot of bright people to our weekly conference. I've met Jay Phillips
and Jason Goecke and they're interesting people to talk to on any
subject, even outside the bounds of the usual geekdom. I only know Dan
York from a few online exchanges and a visit he paid the VUC as a
guest long ago.

So I'm recommending you join us at 12 Noon EDT Friday July 24th to not
only hear what all the buzz is about but also ask questions, make
comments and drink the free virtual beer (you must be of legal virtual
drinking age in your area). It's that virtual beer that got me in
trouble on the second, non recorded, R-rated portion of our session
last Friday.

If you have a decent phone, it probably does g722 so join our call on
the ZipDX wideband bridge: 200901@login.ZipDX.com
or call in to the Talkshoe g711 SIP URI: 7463#22622#1@proxy.IdeaSIP.com

IRC back channel #voip-users-conference

There's also a live stream and more information at http://VUC.me

Thanks to Digium, OnSIP, e4strategies and ZipDX for all the help and
support. Several regulars on the VUC come from those companies and
provide a lot of insight in their areas. Should be a fun call this
week.

/r

Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Get your offer price right, and the people on
there do the job just fine.

Re: [asterisk-biz] DID - Italy

Hi ,

We are Italy based carrier and have high capacity for DDI and toll free
numbers.

One thing you need to know, toll free numbers which are called from Mobile
or Public pay phone incure different price to the "owner" of number , we
can advise and provision affordable price to address those callers/cost
with alternative toll free numbers.

Get in touch with us offlist.

Best wishes,

Mo,

I'd go with Google Voice for that, though when I tried it with my voice it
was a miserable failure

I've seen this on a demo Google Voice account for Voicemail's.  Haven't seen a open source text-to-speech available, I agree with Alex.  I'd love to know of one as well.

If this were easy and/or computationally feasible to do accurately
without spending a great deal of money on expensive proprietary
technology, you'd know the answer already.
