A US company is not liable for VAT anyway.
The employee however will be reliable for income taxes. In
the US that's not a problem because we file a tax return,
but the sitution might be different in the UK.
There might also be other things he (employee) might be
liable for like the equivalent of social security, healthcare,
etc.
